GRAVEYARD SHIFT
In the 1500's,
because of the fear of burying someone
alive, sometimes a string was tied from the wrist of the corpse to a bell positioned above the ground. Someone was selected to work the "graveyard shift" - this means sitting up all night in the graveyard listening for the bell to ring. The expressions "dead ringer" and "saved by the bell" also originated from this practice.
